Hello,
My name is Julio C. Santa-Cruz.  I am 22 years old and I've been interested in becoming an actor ever since I received my black belt (1992). I’ve also had the opportunity to study under Hakim Alston "The Machine" in W.M.A.C. Masters, TV show and he was also in Mortal Kombat and other films.  I've been writing several people for help.  I would love to start with something, and I know I will have to start from the bottom up.  I don't mind working there as the cleaning guy or any think like that, it could help me out by watching other actors and learn from watching.  I would appreciate if you could please help me out.  I'm in the military right now (entered in January 99 and will be getting out 2002). Thank you so much for your time.

Sincerely,
Julio Santa-Cruz
P.S.  If you like I could send a picture of myself. Thanks again.

Hello Julio,
You mentioned being in the armed forces. I am sure you can find a base theatre to get some stage work under your belt...depending on where you are stationed. Maybe there is a good camera acting coach somewhere near. Your MA training is strong and will serve you well if you pursue MA movies and action films. Use the same discipline to approach the acting side and build that resume. Once your proving that side to yourself it will be easy to prove it to others. Do not forget you have already made a few good contacts it seems. Keep up with those folks, when they see your working both ends...they may just lend a hand!

Break a leg!

Sincerely,

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am 20 years old and I am finishing university this coming June. I will hopefully have a law degree. However, I have at the same time been pursuing an acting career especially in martial arts. I am London based and I have exceptional martial arts ability. I have done some acting and have had experience in some commercials and a TV show. I have also a very good look. At the moment I am going to sign up with an agent after my degree. It is Susi Earnshaw Management. I haven't considered going to a drama school because their fees are around £10,000 for a year’s course.

I would ideally like to become a leading actor in films. My martial arts ability and my look will help me I hope. I'm not sure what to do about drama school or whether to go out to LA to seek work- I'm not sure about the green card issue, etc. Could you please give me your advice or any contacts you feel that may help me?

Sincerely,
Dan Cade

Dear Dan,
Did you know that Alec Baldwin was pursuing Law before he became an actor? Not a bad thing to keep in mind. Since your MA training is not in question...lets get right to the acting. Yes, some drama schools cost a fortune. However, if you look and ask around you may be surprised to find someone just like me who teaches private acting sessions for camera acting. Some of us do not charge an arm and a leg. We know it is costly to pursue the industry in general and we try to build dreams not make a fortune. Ask around and pick up some trade papers for your area...or the nearest area known to have camera work going on all the time. Get references and do not be afraid to ask questions to your satisfaction. I have always said the best private coaches are the one's who make the most sense to you without making promises. You need to focus on camera acting, hitting your mark, finding your light, and the business of the biz. If you can find a coach who can give you that...especially one who has worked in the industry...you may have your training right there. If you already have contacts with agents, they can also give you names of strong coaches.

No need to cross the ocean just yet...You can learn plenty in and around London for instance. Filming in the UK has started to grow. Worry about the green card later...it could take some time to even get one. You might apply early on and forget you did, and then train while you wait!

Break a leg!

Hey Michele,
I'm Aaron Laird. I have trained in the martial arts for 12 years. Right now I'm an actor. I have acted in 6 martial arts movies so far. Could you please hook me up with your casting director?

Dear Aaron,
I am so glad you’re out there working the industry. However, it is not the norm for anyone to 'hook' you up sight unseen. Any contacts I do have for getting talent in the door are hard earned. I proved I knew what they were looking for, and who had the talent and ability to handle the pressure. Having never met you, and the lack of knowledge of your work (and I say this to teach, not to be mean), I would shoot myself in the foot to 'hook up' a stranger. Take that as a lesson and not a put down, you may well be wonderful...lol...but we have never met!

Break a leg!

Sincerely,
Michele Seidman
