Luke Broadlick
by Reporter Mark Huard

Luke
Broadlick entered and won his first tournament in forms as a beginner
belt and that’s all it took, he was hooked.
Over the next 3 years he would go on to win 8 MARRS state
championships in forms, weapons, and sparring in the state of
Arizona
. Luke trains in Gilbert at
DePalmas Team
USA
under Master Fred DePalma, Mr. Matt Watkins & Mrs. Diane Rose in
American Kenpo.

In
December 2003 he attained his first black belt and decided to try his
hand at national competition by entering the 2004 COMPETE NASKA
tournament in
California
. Luke had quite an eye
opening experience at that first National tournament but he saw what he
would need to do to be able to compete with the national competitors and
went home and went to work. July
2004 Luke went to
Camp
Chat
before the US Open and that changed his life forever.

Not
only did Luke get to train with World Champion Mike Chat but he met
Sensei John Sharkey Jr. and Craig Henningsen who have become a large
part of his life. Craig
gave Luke a private lesson at camp and he went on to place as a finalist
in extreme forms at the US Open. Luke
then went on to compete the 2nd half of 2004 on the NASKA
circuit earning a year end top 10 finish in 4 events.
Luke also entered 3 WSKF tournaments and made it to his first
night time finals at Michael Bernardo’s Canadian Open, he didn’t win
but it gave him a taste of what was to come.

Luke
trained with Craig and Sensei Sharkey at each of the tournaments and
flew to
Naperville
,
IL
to Sharkey’s karate as often as he could.
He really trained hard during the off season to be ready for the
2005 tournaments. January
2005 Luke entered the WSKF Los Angeles Grand Nationals and won his first
night time finals winning the 17 & under overall forms title. He
became a member of TEAM AKA and the NASKA season started off with a bang
for Luke winning his first NASKA grand championship in
creative/musical/extreme forms and his first NASKA overall grand
championship at COMPETE.
Along
the way Luke was asked by World Champion Matthew Mullins to perform with
his new performance team Sideswipe Kids.
The kids made some great demos that led to performing live on the
Ellen DeGeneres show in February and he perfomed with Sideswipe Kids and
the adult Sideswipe at an arena football game in MI in March.
Luke
has really enjoyed performing and wouldn’t mind someday getting into
show business. Luke’s
hard work has paid off as he has earned his way to the night time finals
in 4 of the 5 NASKA tournaments and winning 2 of them.
His goal this year is to win World Championships and with hard
work, focus, and determination he will strive to reach that goal.
Luke
can’t wait for the next tournaments so he can see all the new friends
he has made this year that he knows will be his life long friends.
