Hello Michele,
I am sending information on my son Davis Kelly. he has
been featured in two issues of Sports Illustrated and
Time magazine. Please take the time to read information
on Davis. What would be the chances for Davis to get a
part in a movie? Please respond
Download and read
Harold
Dear Harold,
Your son is a martial artist with a strong background
and from what you have told me so far...no acting
training. With that in mind, his chance are slim to none
to getting a film part. He might get one or two small
roles based on his tender age. He may get a few more
talk shows too but if you want him to be taken seriously
to do the acting parts...he has to be trained for that.
No one would expect to go to a dojo and fight without
training first!
Your child's information is very impressive but it does
not mention acting. In fact you list his goals as MA and
helping other kids realize their dreams. Nothing
regarding acting was included in his goals or training.
We have all seen many athletes try to act and fail. Very
few make it over to film and most who do, trained to act
on top of their other skills. Rather than have your
child end up with one or two small roles based only on
the sport related information...get him the serious
training he needs to be looked at like a real contender
in acting too.
Let me know if we can offer more help.

Hello
Did not know who to contact in regard to the film. My
son Davis Kelly is 12 years old. Davis has appeared in
two issues of Sports Illustrated and Time Magazine.
Davis has received calls from the Jay Leno and the Ellen
degenerss show. Davis is the only living human that has
won 34 Gold Metals back to back. Are there any opening
in the film for someone like Davis. If you want to know
more about Davis download his info.
Respectfully Yours

I am looking at this site to see about martial art film
schools in southern california. This is why I am on this
site.
Sincerely,
Monty
Dear
Monty,
This site is not devoted to listing schools in any part
of the country and as far as I know their is no such
school anywhere. There are film school and dojo's but I
do not know of any honest to goodness legitimate
'martial arts film school'. The one or two that claimed
to do that never finished any films that I know of so I
never suggest schools of that type. Even schools that
claim to teach stunt for film seldom lead to much work
because all stunt coordinators want you to follow their
lead and not what some teacher taught you.
Try training separately for now. It is harder but you
prove yourself and have a better chance at being taken
seriously by agents and casting directors. Let us know
if we can help more.

You want to know if something is a scam but you do
not mention where you live or what company or agent or

Ahy my name is Steven and am wondering
what karate styles you need for karate
films I do Shotokan and is that good enough thanks mail
me back as soon as possible.
Steven,
Different stunt coordinators use different styles. I
have seen some Karate and some Judo and more than one
style of both in use on feature film sets. There is no
one single style best suited for film. What is best is
to try and intern for a stunt coordinator who uses the
style you trained in. You can break in the door faster
that way.
Research the stunt coordinators who do martial arts to
figure out which ones use your style the most and send
them your information. Let us know if you need more

My name is Annemarie F***** and I am 11 years old. I
live in West Des Moines, Iowa. I REALLY REALLY want to
be an actress on T. V. but I don't know what to do or
how to get there. I really want to go to Hollywood,
California and start acting but, I have not took any
classes yet but my parents are going to sign me up for
acting classes. I also am starting to do school plays.
We live in Iowa so I have to wait until I am 18 so I can
go to college in Hollywood or L. A and act. Is there any
acting classes or camps I could go to, at my age ,over
the summer, in Hollywood , L. A, or New York? I would
really like to be on a comedy show like That's So Raven
or The Suite life of Zack and Cody on Disney channel.
but I dont know where to find a coach or an agent. I
also don't know where to find a director, producer,
casting people etc.
Sincerely, Annemarie F*****
P.S. When you go to California to act where do you
go ? Do you go to find an agent and a coach? Do you go
to an acting studio or what? I'M WORRIED!
Dear
Annemarie,
You are worried about too much too soon darling! Slow
down because you have a ton of time. You live in an area
that is not known for much filmmaking so you are going
to have to pay your dues the old fashioned way to start.
That means theatre. Not musical theatre but studio and
black box theatre. Musical theatre will train you to act
in a style that is too large for TV and film so stick
with the studio stuff. Because you are still in school
you should do any shows there that you can to learn more
skills and build a resume.
There are theatre arts camps all over the country that
you can attend during summer vacations. I suggest you
sit down with your parents and do some web searches and
decide together which camps you might want to go to.
Make sure your parents help out because they know which
camps they can afford and which ones they feel safe
about you going to. You can email me back when you
narrow it down to a few and I will give you my
suggestions then.
Since you cannot go to Hollywood now you will not be
able to try out for some of the shows you mentioned for
some time. First worry about learning how to act and
build a resume. That way when it is time for you to look
for an agent...they will sign you because you already
have a strong resume. As for me, I go to shoot films
where they pay me to go. Email back when you have some
camp ideas or if you cannot locate any near you.

Subject: reg: MA choreography gung fu
Dear Michele,.
Great website!
I'm writing regarding my fiancée. He is a 28 yr old
male with decade plus of MA experience, He has owned his
own Gung Fu school (small but close-knit) for the last 6
years as head teacher. His style is similar to the sort
of thing you see w/ Jet Li or Jackie Chan, but more so
in movies like House of Flying Daggers, etc... He can
almost fully imitate the "Matrix" scenes if
with the right partner. His dream is to choreograph
scenes like in those movies. Or perhaps even work in
them, since I've read in your email replies that you
need film time first. Any leads for agents, SAG offices,
etc.. in our area or additional advise? Any response
would be greatly appreciated. We live in Whitehall
(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) area.
Thank you very much,
Denise
Dear Denise,
Since you and your fiancée live in Pennsylvania your
best bet is to start with the www.sag.com
web site. Your area is union so any good agent near you
will be listed with them. He will have to join the union
and use a union rep so start there. Do not forget to
look up agents in DC and NYC since both are a short
train ride away. Travel may be a a necessity because
work in the North east gets spread out between NYC, NJ,
DC and MD. You can also call the SAG office in NY
because that would be the one to handle your area. One
more...get up with the Drama Bookshop and order the Ross
Report because it does cover the North eastern agents in
a lot of detail.
If he wants to choreograph he might try to get involved
with some of the student filmmakers in the area to at
least start and get some footage to show examples of
what he can set up...but the stunt people up in the
north are very strict on rules and are part of SAG so
check those details on doing student and indie film so
your fiancée does not do anything that could harm him
down the line. Warn him what looks good to the naked eye
may not turn out well on film so he should work with a
camera before he works on a film so he can learn how to
'cheat' the shot.
Write back if you need more guidance!

Hello my name is Sharon ********. My son Keith is
interested in being an actor. I attached his biography
and resume. At your convenience could you review this
and direct us in the right direction to get him started
in action films. Thanks.
Tannen's
Dear Tannen's,
I am giving you the benefit of doubt by answering
because your full signature line suggested you were an
agent. I am willing to help a parent guide their child
but not to help an agent plug an actor under the guise
of seeking help so I removed all of the identifying
information sent.
After reviewing the 'resume' I have to ask what acting
training have you gotten for your child? I only saw MA
training and he needs both to be an action actor. I also
saw nothing but MA stuff listed under the heading
THEATRE, and that is not theatre but SPECIAL SKILLS
listing on an actors resume and TRAINING on a stunt or
MA resume, some being under awards. You will need to
review the proper formats for resumes and what should be
listed. Some agents and casting people will hold it
against a talent for not knowing how to format a resume.
Your son is old enough to start reading if he has not
already done so. That is a perfect age to get your child
involved in theatre or to find a camera acting coach to
train him. It is hard to teach them before they can read
unless the have a great memory. If his reading is not
strong yet you can help him by teaching him how to
memorize lines to start.
Since he is already doing well at the Martial Arts this
could be a great time to add to his training
specifically for the acting side. That will build his
resume with the types of things casting people want to
see with children when they do not live inside a major
city like NYC or LA. Only in the major cities do small
kids get early chances at film and TV work. Some
families move the entire clan to one coast or the other
just to insure their children get an early start. Since
most parents cannot afford to do it, all you can do for
now is help him get a bigger acting resume and more
training.
Don't forget local theatre to start the real acting
resume!

hi Michele .. Do you know anything about Terra Nova Entertainment? and the auditions for the next martial arts superstar?
Thanks
Rene
Dear Rene,
I first went to find the Tera Nova site. If you notice they make it very clear at the bottom of the rules there is nothing in stone. You may or may not get to star in a video IF you become one of the top 2 men or women in the competition. I like the fact they make that clear and easy to read because few good production companies will make any promise.
Now here is where it gets sticky. I then went to the imdb.com web site (Internet movie data base) and I could not find any listing for this production company. It is still possible they have done some MA movies for 'direct to video' release and those are rarely listed on the imdb web site. However, it bothered me to not find any track record on Tera Nova. Even their web site gives nothing to go on as far as their background in the industry, and I searched for that kind of information. They have a lot of * marks without any 'key' to tell you why they have them on the rules page. If you look closely you will notice where the Asterisk marks are (will be made by Hollywood directors*, will get videos produced for winners*, etc.). It says they have 30 years in the industry but they do not list one single project they have ever produced.
Do a quick check with the BBB in their area and then send your information on. If they do get this thing on air it could be great exposure. But be aware, they do not list any network affiliated to actually air this project and that concerns me a bit too. It is listed as a 'pilot' which means they do not have any network to distribute it yet. That does not mean they will not find one to air it, it simply means there is no guarantee that it will ever see the light of day. Keep in mind the site says you have to pay your own way through the entire process. It could get expensive and if it never airs it might be a lesson learned. If it does get picked up that is another ball game all together but at this time there is not certainty. If you do get on, make them add a 'ryder' to your contract that says you will get daily footage from all of your shoots. That way if nothing happens with the project, you will have some footage to build your own 'reel' with.
Please let us know if you find out anything that I missed and we will add it here so others might look in to things themselves!

Subject: Michele-acting advice
Hi, my name is Louis Thompson, and I found your
site while looking up information on becoming a
martial arts action star. I would like to break
into this genre, but I'm not sure how. I am
currently a student at East Carolina University.
I have studied different styles of martial arts,
and I have some tumbling experience. I was
wondering if you could offer me some advice on
what to do. I have also had trouble finding good
martial arts schools that would be able to teach
many of the extreme techniques seen in today's martial arts movies. I would really appreciate
your help.
Thank
you for your time and have a nice day.
Dear
Louis,
There are a schools out there but few if any are
very strong for what you seek. The extreme
techniques you are talking about are partially
done with wires. So much of the action packed
fighting these days is added to with tricks from
the camera, the computer and all kinds of wires
and pulleys. Some of what looks so extreme is
just shooting from strange angles. Don't get me
wrong, it is still hard work but it has not
changed as greatly on the work side as it has on
the editing and FX side. You can train in any
good dojo, and you will still need to add to
your training once you are on set. On set
fighting is not like any other type of MA
fighting because it requires no contact or light
contact and you will have to learn how and when
to hold back a hit and still look full force.
You can only learn that while doing it because
it has to be timed and worked out for each
camera angle. Every single time they move the
camera you will have to shift your 'cheat'.
Take advantage of ECU, Sandra Bullock did come
out of there! Since you are in NC, make sure you
get your name known to stunt men in the state,
like Dean Mumford and John Copeman. They are two
of the best and work nationwide even though they
are based in North Carolina. Both have some MA
background and they also hire MA people. Check
their names on the imdb for listings and finding
a contact number or try the Wilmington Film
Commission web site. Send them your photo and
resume with a cover letter telling them the
basics of what you told me. If they use you, it
might be as an intern at the start and you may
not be allowed to do any of the action until
they are certain you will follow their
guidelines. It WILL get your foot in the door
and help you get leads for the specifics you
want. They both work with some of the top MA
actors and stunt people.
Hope that helps, but email if you need a little
more guidance.

Good afternoon,

the net looking for martial agents. I live in

Could you possibly help me????
Many thanks
Darren Allen
Darren,
The
best place to look for agents listings is
through the unions set up for actors and
filmmakers. The union for actors in the UK is
called Equity. They do have a web site but I was
not able to locate it today (my browser is
acting up). In the states Equity is just for
stage actors but my research shows your Equity
covers both stage and film. Check the web site
for agents. Most unions will list agents that
work within the union guidelines. This will help
you be certain you find strong agents who are
not out to scam you and take your money.
Break a leg and let us know if we can help more.

Dear Clarissa,
I
have no idea what city or state you live in.
Without some basic geographic location I cannot
suggest any particular coach. You can start by
doing local stage shows so you can build your
acting and auditioning skills. You will still
need some camera training classes because the
style of acting for stage is bigger than for
camera. If you do small theatre shows and not
big musicals, you will have an easier time
making the change later. If there is a college
near by that has a theatre program, you may find
a coach there. I really need to know what

Don't forget to read the articles I wrote on

Dear James,
Hollywood is full of stunt and action actors.
Since you are in Europe anyway, have you
considered breaking in the door there first?
Your video work will give you something to show
stunt people as an example. Don't forget you
have Sheffield Studios, and Cinne Cita is just
across the water in Rome. Some of the biggest
"Hollywood" films have been shot near
you. Even "Cold Mountain", a movie
about the Carolinas in the USA was shot in
Romania.
Before you head to California where the best
connections are...add some more work to your
resume right near home. That way when you come
over here you will have a great credit list AND
you will have already made some Los Angeles
contacts while you are working near home. It
will make it easier to come here with some
networking already done!

sincerly B
Dear B,
Lets start at the beginning. This may be a
little hard to read. If you want anyone to take
you seriously do NOT email using slang and
symbols. If you want to be seen as a
professional YOU must act like one. Dreams are a
wonderful thing but they do not pay the rent.
If you want your parents to take this seriously
then you have to do the same. From where I sit
(and remember this is a guess based on your
email)...you are dreaming about this but not
putting anything in to action.
Since you are 13, start with school plays. Then
try out for community theatre where there are
more people to compete with. If you take this
seriously and work hard at it your parents will
start to support you. They have good reason to
not want to help out yet. 99% of those who try
to be actors NEVER make money at it. Your
parents want you to be aware for a good reason.
They are trying to raise you so you can support
yourself someday and they are probably afraid
they will have to pay your rent forever if you
try acting with your current style.
You are young though and have time to learn. See
if there are any camera acting teachers in your
area. Teachers not only show you the tricks for
acting but they often have some of the best
connections and know where to find casting
people. Like some of the other emails I have no
clue what area you are in so it makes it hard to
give any specifics. If you email back a location
I can help a little more.
Just remember, your parents will take this
seriously when you do!
Michele

Greetings Michelle, (LETTER EDITED FOR SPACE,
SEE STORY FOR FULL DETAILS)
I am a retired science teacher (70 years of age)
with deadly prostate cancer (nine years now but
only given 18 months to live). Due to my
condition and the startling fact that arguably
the greatest black kick boxer (and most likely
the greatest American kick boxer ever),
seven-time world champion, Cliff 'Magic' Thomas,
hasn't sufficiently been given his just rewards,
I spent three years writing a book about him to
remind those who may have forgotten that this
icon of the sport who was born with a hole in
his heart the size of a silver dollar and not
expected to live past age fourteen, just
recently retired his last championship belt but
is gearing up for a book and speaking tour. That
being said (lengthy but true), the book is
obviously called "Magic, Magic,
Magic."
(Section edited)
So
why has no producer or star (Black in Cliff's
case) never really taken the serious side of a
karate or kickboxing icon and leapfrogged the
'B' movie themes that most karate films have?
Well, I don't know but I would submit to you
that someone, somewhere, somehow, should check
out Cliff's story (unique in the sport because
he is black and a rare role model who mostly
avoided alcohol and parties to reach the
pinnacle of his sport) fire up the gray matter
and let the old and the new fans and ardent
supporters of the martial arts rekindle or learn
of Cliff's accomplishments by means of a movie.
Silly as it sounds Jaime Foxx actually is a
Cliff look alike at about age 38. Cliff is now
48 but still fit and could actually fight again
if necessary. He beat Thomas Downing of Canada
for his 6th title and Michael "The
Godfather" Corleone in 2002 for his 7th
title even though his was 46 years of age.
I guess you easily surmised why I wrote the
book. I will be amongst the dearly departed in
the not too distant future and I want to do what
I can to ensure my beloved friends legacy. Chuck
Norris never won a full contact title but he can
act a little and he is a first class salesman.
Cliff
is in the World Karate Union Hall of Fame with
Chuck, but is more modest and actually more
charming. Cliff is also in the Texas Karate Hall
Of Fame, the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame and
the Dallas/Ft. Worth Hall of Fame and some other
awards. His fight with Vizzio had a clip shown
on NBC Sports world for numerous years in their
opening segments.

Dear Thomas,
Why is Cliff not as well known as he should be?
You may have a point about his being black but
thank goodness times have changed greatly. I
would guess part of the reason is that he was
the one taking most of the hits. Often those who
do the hardest jobs on films get over looked
from stunt men down the lines to production
coordinators. You and I know it takes all parts
but sometimes the Hollywood machine forgets we
ALL love a heart warming story about a real life
hero.
Cliff Thomas, SHOULD have a story done on him
and I am very glad you have been working on
this. I have a feeling once word gets out on his
story that people will want to option the book.
I will be honest…if I had the money I would
option the book and wrestle to get it made. That
IS how good I think the story is.
I myself forwarded your email in its entirety to
a few producers I know fairly well. I kept the
email in tact with all the contact information
on it. I have no idea if anyone will call but I
am hoping they do. In case no one calls
fast…give me a ‘good will’ option for six
months and let me give it a try. One of the main
issues will be no script written yet. If the
book is not out yet that slows things down a bit
too but I still think this is a story worth
fighting over. I just hope they are smart enough
to include your story in the mix. I think the
fact you are trying to do this with your own
life upside down speaks volumes about what a
wonderful human you are and what an incredible
friend you are to Cliff. Cliff must be something
to have you in his corner.
Please keep me informed and email us with

I will gladly send you a book, etc., if you

you suggested on the board.

.
I also have film...lots of film. If you get the
opportunity, look at the film of his fight
against the mighty and worthy Paul Vizzio back
in 1981. It is shuddering what he did to another
fantastic and super champion. That is a classic
of all time. Or, when he was the first fighter
to hold two titles at the same time when he
destroyed welterweight champion , Tommy
Williams, in a racially tense encounter. Or, his
fights with Tony Rosser which are know in the
business as WW1, WW2 and WW3.
When the PKA under Joe Corley ( took the heat
but there were other forces at work) for the
collapse of the best fight game ever invented,
Cliff had won four titles, more than anyone else
in history. Fortunately, ISKA saved the day for
a spell and most of the PKA went under that
umbrella. Cliff would destroy Thomas
chesterfield for the Lt. Welterweight title and
his 5th world championship.
The most wonderful aspect of Cliff's personality
is that he was a grandmaster role model in the
days when black kids really need a standout to
look up to and other than the tens of thousands
who were party to Thomas' closeness and career,
Hollywood and the media snubbed him other than
an occasional part in a film. A household name
in martial arts and kickboxing, he was just
another victim when it came time for someone to
do the right thing and give the icon of the
sport his just dues.
Cliff can still get it on if necessary. He
proved that by coming out of retirement and
blasting his way to two more world titles.
However, he and his lovely wife Wanda have a
handicapped daughter to care for in Ft. Worth.
Cliff was offered some good jobs out of the area
but is a staunch supporter of his family and
loves them dearly.
Okay, I've rambled enough. Please get back to me
and lets see what we can do about that 6 month
option.

Mar vista High School in Imperial Beach ,
California was my Alma Mater. I used to groom

Darn, I got too tall. After the Marine cops,
1953-56, I got into boxing and served as a
policeman for El Paso and later as Sgt. In
Charge of Criminal Investigations for UTEP. Then
I hooked up with Randall 'Tex' Cobb for a spell
and there were some hellacious times during
those days. Whew!!!! Randall takes up most of
chapter two of my book.
The second edition of the book will be bigger (
6X 9) and of much better quality. It should be
out around December 1st. I still have 200 copies
of the first edition.

I hope I am not bothering you, but I was
interested in the Joe Corley
American Karate school for my son. I was hoping
that you could tell me
whether you recommend this company or not?
Thank you,
Anna
Hi
Anna,
I looked up the school and they have strong
credits in the MA world for sure. Plus it seems
they also train local law enforcement which is
always a good sign. Police departments almost
always find the best MA places to train. I put a
call in to one of their locations and asked if
any instructor had worked on MA films. The lady
I spoke to thought one of the instructors does
so she is checking and going to give me a call
back. I will add her reply as soon as someone
calls me back. I will say…even if they do not
have anyone who has done film, they sound like a
very strong dojo for anyone to get started from.
Since we are talking about Atlanta…your
daughter could train for MA at the Joe Corley
school and then look for a private acting coach
like Charles Lawlor. He teaches acting in
Atlanta and has had plenty of students find work
in film and television. I have not seen him in a
few years but rumor has it he is still there
teaching (I have not been that way in ages). I
still see his www.imdb.com
listing growing so I know Charles is still out
there working away. If you find him, tell him I
said hello!
I will let you know when they contact me about
their instructors! I might email it directly for
timing so keep an eye on your spam folder too (I
will put the site name in the subject box).

yor city any suggestions??
Dear Kofi,
You
start by learning which publications were made
FOR actors. The craig list is nice and all but
it is not an actors site. I have no clue who NY
Casting is…but if they charge you a single
dime they are ripping you off because they get
paid to get you work. Any real casting agency is
hired by productions and paid a fee to cast
actors. ACTORS DON’T PAY TO BE SEEN BY CASTING
OR AGENTS. Sorry to yell but I have said this
over and over on this board and on the main page
of my articles here on this site.
It sounds like you are dealing with extras
casting possibly because no real actor would pay
a fee to be seen. Some companies take advantage
of those who do not know better.
You say you are an MA actor but you do not
mention any acting training at all. My guess is
you have not taken much training or you would
already know not to pay out any money and you
would know to buy the Ross Report to locate REAL
agents and casting directors. The Ross Report is
published monthly because agents change
companies. The Ross Report can be purchased at
the Drama Book store in NYC and several other
locations there.
You also want to find the REAL Backstage
magazine and not off of web sites. Very little
casting is done off the web. I have been acting
30 years and have NEVER been booked off the web.
Does that tell you anything? Even my students
who work the web like crazy have only gotten a
student film or two through the web. My agent
video tapes me and other actors for auditions
that are too far away because casting wants to
see a LIVE version of the actor not just a still
photo and a resume.
( Alexander: Ignore this line it wont go away
dag nab it and no clue how it got here either…lol)
Honestly Kofi…go get some good training on the
business of acting. Buy Hollywood 101 by
Frederick Levy and then work forward. You need
to understand how this business works before you
give anyone the wrong first impression. Let us
know if we can help more,

acting advice for a beginner {please help me].
hey what's up?
i'm a 14 year old girl who is starting a acting
carree and i'm very shy and nervice so i was
wondering if you can please give me any kind of
advice or tips on how to stay focus. and how to
prepare for auditions, interview, and any other
stuff i need to know about acting. so please
help me. thank you so much.bye.
Dear Veronica,
If you can find anyone who does not get nervous
before or after a show...they are going to be
over 40 and have done this all their lives. Even
some older talent still get nervous. Shy is
something you will have to work on. I used to be
horribly shy and seldom talked, only watched
people. Maybe what I did to break out of my
shell will help you. I started by pretending in
my own head that I was a reporter for the
newspaper.
When
I met new people I would ask them to tell me
about themselves. People like to talk about
their own life so it is easy to get people to
talk. No matter what they say or talk about you
can ask more questions...new ones or for more
detail on what they bring up. The idea is
getting yourself more comfortable around new
people. You can also take a public speaking
class. This way you can practice speaking in
front of strangers, none of which are going to
judge you because they are there for the same
reason.
As in anything practice makes it better over
time. You might try to do some small parts in
local stage shows. Many people who are major
actors were once very shy. Know in your heart,
you are not alone and lots of us went through
the same things. As for those nerves, in some
cases only time helps but some actors meditate
or do stretching exercises before shows to relax
their nerves. Deep, slow breathing to lower your
heart rate is another trick. You may want to try
a few things and see which works for you.
I hope that helped. If those tricks don't work,
email us back and I will give you a few more!

Hi Michele my name is Brandi and i want to get
involved in action movies and doing stunts in
movies i have done alot of martial arts and am
very serious about it and was wondering if it
cost alot of money to get an agent and start
doing commercials and additions.
Thanks for
your time Brandi
Brandi,
DON'T GIVE ANY AGENT MONEY BEFORE THEY GET YOU
WORK. Sorry to yell like that but I just wanted
to make a strong point. No good agent will take
a single dime from you until they get you a job.
At that time they get a set percentage of the
pay you get. You do not pay them filing fee's,
set up cost, phone service cost, or any other
supposed fee other than the 'contracted' amount
already set up in writing regarding 'work' done.
You mention being involved in MA for some time
but you do not mention anything about acting.
Good agents will NOT look at you for commercial
auditions or film without some type of acting,
or acting training on your resume. If you want
to do commercial and film work you will HAVE to
train for camera acting even if you build your
resume with stage shows at the same time.
I hope I am right in assuming you don't have any
acting background. I can only go by what you
wrote in your email. Please go to the articles
on this site that I wrote regarding getting
acting training. That will speed a few things
up. Email us back when you are ready to move to
the next stages. If you jump ahead you might get
cheated and spend money you never had to spend.

Hi Michele,
I really do appreciate this you being on this
web site helping martial artist who want to
become actors. I am a 22 year old male martial
artist, who has been struggling to get into the
action actor segment. I have practiced for 7
years, more for sparring than forms (kata). I
have tried out for many movies in the San Diego
and Los Angles area. Each time, I haven't been
chosen or called on again for these reason.
Either I need to have an agent, or, for roles
calling for young Asian males, I'm not
"Asian" enough. Seeing that I'm half
Korean, half Caucasian, I'm taller and more
heavily built than most Asian males. I have been
extra's for the TV show JAG( I'm in the
military), and was used in a recruiting
commercial. But, nothing to do with martial
arts. the question I'm wondering is, is there a
way to get around having an agent to break into
the action actor area. If not, what agencies do
you recommend for martial art actors to sign on
with? Especially in the Seattle area (I will be
moving there soon). Your help is greatly
appreciated. Thanks!
Dear Sean,
Funny how you spend most of your life here in
the states and everyone tells you look Asian
only to be told by film people you do not look
Asian enough. In film your best assets work for
and against you...but one day your 'look' will
be exactly what they want. You see, with the
Caucasian thrown in you do not fit the stereo
type for Asians. Silly I know. If it helps...I
am southern born and told I don't seem southern
enough. I am part Celt, Ukrainian and Mongolian
and yet I have played more Italian women than
'Celt' types. It might help to find a strong
acting coach who can help you understand how
'they' see you so you can play up to that.
As for having an agent. It is not legal for them
to tell you that in California. It is only legal
to turn you down based on your not being in the
union because it is a union state. SAG has
serious rules but they do allow actors to self
submit without an agent in California. It may
not be in your best interest to mention this
unless it is a SAG film. If it is a union film
telling you you must have an agent, they can get
a huge fine for it. They will not push the issue
if they know you are aware. Otherwise you would
have to get to know key stunt people and try to
work under them to break in that way but that
could mean working for free until they trust you
on safety and following their directions.
However, without an agent you are fighting a
battle that is too big for a single human to
fight. Even if California films and casting
people HAVE to allow self submitting actors...it
makes their job harder. Agents are a clearing
house of sorts for the casting process. It is
easier for casting to call 50 agents to see a
1000 actors...but to call a 1000 actors...YIKES.
Few actors have a clue about handling
negotiations and that is an even bigger reason
to get an agent. I can read a contract almost as
well as a lawyer, so they lawyers tell me...but
I have been reading those kind of contracts for
30 years.
I have to be honest about Seattle. I know it as
a music scene and not as a film scene. You can
check the SAG web site and see if they list
agents there but you might have to do some
serious research on that area before you go. One
last thing...as for extra work...STOP. Are you
an actor or an extra? Pick one! In California
you have a ton of people who do nothing but
extra work and make a living on it and they
never want to be actors. Those people can get
bitter about people taking their jobs. What if
you get an extra gig that was supposed to go to
some guy who has worked on 100 films as an
extra? He has more contacts than you and has
more trust from the crew than you...because he
has been there quietly doing his job for years.
That extra could make you look bad if your not
careful...and people will trust them before you
because they have been around so long.
Besides...extras are NOT actors. I know that
extras CAN make all the difference in how a film
looks. Extras are very important to filming, but
they are not actors, and on the West coast there
is a major distinction. Plus, SAG does not allow
for more than 3 'upgrades' on films out there.
Upgrading is when an extra is given a real line.
That is rare and more often than not, the line
will go to an extra they have known a long time.
More often than not they will call around to
find a union actor before they upgrade anyone
because that IS what the union rules make them
do. If you want to be considered for acting
roles, then present yourself as an actor, not an
extra.
Let me know what you find about Seattle. I can
do some background research for you if you write
back with an agents names for that area. Break a
leg and keep us updated.

do you know of any areas for summer jobs?
Hey Michele you don't know me but I'm Eli. Hi
well I'm writing to you cause I was wondering if
you knew of any marital arts choreographer
companies in Hollywood that I can applied to as
a trainee or for a short internship? I have
study martial arts for 11 yrs with Karate and
Aikido and just trying this field to see if I
would like for a full time job after my AA
degree. Any information would be helpful or
phone numbers of who I can contact.
Thanks Eli Gale
Dear
Eli, Unfortunately there is no such thing
as a martial arts choreography company that I
have heard of. Each film hires its own fight
choreographer, also known as the Key Stunt man
or Key Fight coordinator. There is a fairly
logical reason they seldom have companies. Each
film picks the actors it wants to use and the
stunt people then hire others according to the
star and the script. It would be nearly
impossible to prepare people in advance. What
would they do if they prepared a 5’5” woman
to double for an actress who turns out to be
5’9”? They could not use the person they
prepared, which is why they seldom prepare too
many things in advance. Same if they prepare
everyone for Judo when Karate is needed.
If
you are willing to intern and add to your
training for free, you need to research stunt
and fight people who are near you that you might
work for. Contact them and tell them what you
told me. Don’t take no for an answer. Be a
polite pest and write back a few months later
and ask again.
Keep
in mind that lots of people are offering to work
for them for free because it is standard to
train under a fight master before he will use
you for work anyway. If they say they cannot
train you now, ask if you can simply come watch
some of their work if you stay out of the way.
Anything to get on set or around key stunt
people will help you down the line. You might
learn a lot from simply watching and if they see
you plan on sticking it out…they are 10 times
more likely to train and use you down the line.
Don’t
give up. As Gregory Hines once said to me “It
is those who will not be denied”…those
people make it!
Best
wishes,
Michele

2.
if I want to complete my martial arts skill
where is suitable club for training karate
3.
if I can have job for play in a action movie in
Hollywood in in the future
thanks
for your attention
Dear
Hafez,
I
am not aware if Jean Claude has his own work out
gym. His personal life seems to have prevented
him from getting as much film work lately. I can
understand you being a fan of his work and fight
style but you might go farther if you pick
another role model. I do not want to detail why
I say this, but it is public record that he has
assaulted women. Hollywood does not put up with
that kind of behavior for long.
As
for question 2, I do not know where you live so
it is impossible to suggest a place to train for
you. Are you in the USA or another country? If
you can give me a general location I can help
you better. Question 3: Can you ‘have a job in
film? No, you cannot ‘have’ a job you must
work for it and earn your way in. It is possible
that English is not your first language and I
took the question wrong because our grammar is a
bit different. So if I got that wrong please
tell me and I will try to answer it better.
It
may not seem like I have helped much but you
have only 5 years in the Martial Arts and only
20 years old. You have plenty of time to add
more training in MA, but don’t forget to train
for camera work too! Take some acting classes or
find and karate teacher who has worked on movies
before so he can teach you the differences for
film.
I
wish you the best and send me your location so I
can look in to a good dojo for you.
Michele
Dear
Michelle;
Guilin
(China) 12th May 2005.
Greetings.
How are you?
My
name is Silvio Simac. I am currently in China
shooting "Dead or Alive" based on
Play-station / X Box game. It is directed
by Cory Yuen and I play a character of Leon in
the midst of the most stunning scenery I have
had the opportunity to be in.
In
March I was in Bulgaria shooting a Nu Image
Production “Undisputed 2” with Isaac
Florentine and next month I will be seen across
the silver screens internationally in
"Unleashed" / "Danny The
Dog" where I have a wonderful fight scene
against Jet Li.
As
it happens "Danny The Dog" is getting
theatrical release in Hong Kong next month. The
Hong Kong posters for Danny The Dog are
featuring Jet Li and myself which has been a
great publicity for me in Asia thus far and
created new opportunities.
Beyond,
Dead or Alive, I am looking to come to the USA
and explore some work opportunities. I've hooked
up with few non martial arts / action people out
there so I would be very grateful if you would
kindly point me in the right direction as to
where the best place to go, find a good PR
agent, Management etc.
P.S.
You can take a look at my resume and photographs
either on www.silviosimac.com
or www.silviosimac.co.uk
although they are both under construction at the
moment and not complete.
Thank
you very much in advance. Have a nice day and I
hope to hear from you soon.
Kind
regards
Silvio
Simac
To
Silvio,
You do not seem to need much help from me young
man. You are out in the middle of it all and
doing it. I hope some of the others reading the
board notice how much you are out there hustling
for your craft! You make a great example for
others here.
I
do not know if you plan on going to NY or
California but agents have offices in both
cities most often. First ask those
friends/contacts who they use for agents and PR.
You might be able to meet with their agents
faster than with those you have no connection
with. Some of the top agents are still I. A.
& William Morris. You can purchase a little
book/magazine called the Ross Report through the
Drama Bookstore in NYC (they have an online site
too but I don’t have the link). It is
published monthly and includes all of the
agents, casting people, PR and more. It only
cost a few dollars and it gets put out monthly
because agents move around a bit.. After you get
a copy go to a site called www.WhoRepresents.com.
On
the search part, type in the names of some of
the MA actors you are most likely to work with.
You can find out which agent and PR person they
are listed with. If you do this first you are
more likely to find the agents who handle MA
actors and have the right connections for them
to get work. DO NOT go for agents who handle MA
actors who look like you or who you might
compete with. Most good agents will not put
actors against each other in any audition. They
are going to work first for the person who
already makes them money.
Since
you have publicity going in Asia, do some
research on Steve Tartalia since he has done
more MA movies in Asia than almost any other
American. He could be a good role model for you
at this stage of the game. He may not be as
famous as some, but he works more than most!
I
wish you the best and please let us know how
things go in the future.
