'The
Prom'
®
GRANDVIEW
HIGH
Lunch Time...On a clear chilly afternoon the usual school
lunch break crowd of kids are gathering in front of Grandview
High. Kim
is standing talking to Chad
Cummings, a tall muscular young
student in a letter sweater. He is Grandview High student
council president and Kim has an obvious crush on him.
They’re discussing the upcoming joint
Prom, and the novel experience
that created it. In order to ease tensions between their
own high school and their cross-town rival Taft
High, the student council decided
to hold a joint Prom.
It is hoped that the shared fun and excitement of the dance
will put and end to the fights that have been occurring
between the two schools...

“Who you going to the
Prom with?” Chad asks
Kim. Embarrassed
Kim ducks the
question “Well... I'm on the Prom Committee.” Kim
replies.
®
“But
you'll be there won’t you
Kim?”
Chad
asks curiously.
“I wouldn't miss the
Prom for anything.” Kim
responds softly. Suddenly
behind Kim, a large mound of colored shapes looms over
her. She is knocked sprawling by Kirby
Winslow, who
rushes through the crowd of kids and spills his box load
of Prom decorations on top of her.
“Oops I’m so sorry
Kim! Oh hi
Chad,” states
Kirby as he rushes around
picking up the decorations he spilled.
Kim brushes herself off, “Kirby Winslow...watch what
you’re doing!” she snaps at him.
“Oh ah... well, I’m
sorry Kim,” continues
Kirby. “I need your help,”
pleads Kirby. Can you please bring these with you to the
Prom Committee meeting for me? I’ve got Chess Club in
five minutes! Would you please, I’m going to be
late?” he excitedly begs her.
“Okay sure, no
problem” Kim obliges. “Thanks
Kim, see you later!”
Kirby shouts back as he becomes lost within the crowd of
school kids. Kirby Winslow is the class genius and
resident nerd.
Tiffany arrives and pushes
her way through the group.

Tiffany
eyes Kim struggling
with the load of Prom decorations. “Girl, you gotta
stop volunteering for stuff,” states Tiffany with a
smile as she hugs Kim. Right behind her comes Maria.
®
“Hi Kim, hi
Sarah, hey congratulations on making Prom
Queen!" Maria tells her.
“Thank you
Maria. I’m soooo excited!”
exclaims
Sarah.
Kim tries to reengage
Chad. “Do you think there'll be trouble at the dance
Chad?” she asks him. “I sure hope not,” Chad
replies. “These fights between our schools have been
going on for too long and if they keep this going on
much longer, somebody's going to really get hurt.”
“That's why this idea of
both schools having their Proms together has got to
work!” Tiffany adds.
Sarah joins in, “Maybe
it will put an end to these fights between our schools.
Don't you think so Chad?” she asks.
“In the student council
meeting, it seemed like a good idea, but now I'm not so
sure.” Chad responds in a low but steady voice. It’s
like we're putting a whole bunch of dynamite in one
room.” he continues. Now all of Chad's attention turns
to Sarah and it is clear that Kim's feelings are hurt.
“I mean, it's easy to think good thoughts when you're
sitting in the student lounge with your friends but it's
different when you're all alone on a dark street.”
Chad tells them.
“What do you mean?
Sarah
asks.
®
“Well,”
Chad explains,
“last night I'm walking home and this car full of guys
from Central High cruises by and I start thinking
they're the enemy again. And I bet if a bunch of us had
cruised somebody from Central High, he would have felt
just like I did. It's human nature. How do you change
human nature?” he says shrugging his shoulders with
his hands in the air.
“Well, I’m starving
are you girls coming over to Geri’s Deli with us?
Chad
asks as he heads down through the crowd of kids.
“No not today,”
Tiffany says as she and the other girls begin to head
down the school steps. “We have to go get ready for
karate practice. “Bye Chad,”
Sarah
shouts, “We’ll
see you guys at the prom on Friday.” The four girls
wave goodbye and become lost within the crowd of kids on
the school steps as they head to The Karate Angels

secret Dojo.
TERA
At
the same time across town, Billy watches as a group of
his friend are laughing as they crowd into a car and
speed off, leaving him standing alone. He gazes
longingly at the departing car, watching until he hears
the faint screeching of their tires in the far distant.
The wind blowing cold across his freckled face he
angrily kicks a can and starts his lonely walk home. As
he turns a corner, suddenly a strange girl steps out of
a doorway and motions to him. It’s Tera!
®
The
strange girl says, “Hey you. Watcha doing?”
“I’m going home.”
Billy continues as he tries to brush past the girl.
“Like going home and watching TV by myself? He says.
The strange girl says,
“My name is Tera. I have something better to do.”
“Oh, what’s that?”
Billy asks curiously.
“Commere I’ve got
something to show you.”
Billy
cautiously follows Tera
into the alleyway. “Here look at this. She slowly
opens her palm and reveals a brightly glowing object.
The boy gasps, he leans forward to look at it.
“It’s a ring!” he
whispers to himself.
Billy
is fascinated, his face lit
by the eerie bright green glow coming from it! Billy
slowly reaches for the ring. It’s strange powers
already starting to take hold of
Billy.
“Go ahead. Try it on.
Don’t be frightened.” Tera
says...
