GAVONNAH WILLIAMS

Gavonnah started the Martial Arts at the age of 3 and now at age 9 he has become the top competitor in Weapons, Musical Forms, Sparring and Kata in his division. With the progress and strides this little kid has made in the short period of 6 years, he is already a 6-time state champion, AND, a 5-time world champion. 

Gavonnah has won more than 400 trophies, medallions, plaques and certificates combined for his martial arts competitions. He excels in traditional forms, musical routines, weapons and Kumite. He became a Junior Black Belt in December 2002. 

Gavonnah is just 9 years old, if he is not traveling [on competition]; he is at his dojo Saturdays and Sundays with Master Herbie Thompson and Sensei Eli Thompson training. He has captured awards from tournaments in the Bahamas, Jamaica, as well as the United States. 

Gavonnah has been recognized for his accomplishments as Youth Competitor of the Year, where as, he has been inducted into the Cosmopolitan Florida Hall of Fame Martial Arts Brotherhood in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for three years in a row. He was inducted because he is so young and very talented for his age. His techniques are extremely advanced that he competes in the 13 and under division in Musicals and 99% of the time place in the top two.

Gavonnah trains at the Nisei Karate Center from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 pm seven days a week, in addition to attending school and taking part in school activities. He said he likes the hard training "a lot, a lot." He is used to it by now, considering he started training at age 3. 

Gavonnah's Martial Arts Accomplishments: 

· 6-time state champion 

· 5-time world champion 

· has won 2 grand champions 

· youngest to be inducted into the Florida Martial Arts Hall of Fame three times 

· For the year 2002, Gavonnah has won 3 State Championships in FBBA, 3 State Championships in FLMA and 1 State Championship in FAME2K; and, has won 2 Grand Championships where he won a Game Boy Advance and a PlayStation 2.

Gavonnah, a student at Brentwood Elementary School, is excited about passing the FCAT test. In addition to karate he enjoys swimming, football, basketball, chess, computers, billiards and track and field.

Gavonnah performs yearly at the “Give Kids The World Village” a place for very sick kids in Kissimmee, Florida as well as schools, churches and other community events. He has acted in a Michael Jordan commercial and has acted in a Derrick Jeeda commercial. He is also the youngest member of the Christian Power Team. He has been cast in a thesis film for the University of Miami Graduate Motion Pictures program. He was showcased in the Miami Herald for his accomplishments. He was also nominated for the World Youth Hall of Fame of Zephyrhills, Florida. And, he was nominated by a community of partners in Santa Monica, California that showcase kids who are accomplishing amazing things - he was selected Amazing Kid for the Month of November 2002.

Gavonnah’s mother enrolled him in karate classes in hopes that he'd overcome his shyness. "He needed this," she said. "He' was so timid.” The instructors saw something in him and it's been good ever since.

As his instructor, Master Herbie Thompson says, "This is one incredible kid!"
