martial arts fighters bring home top honours

Two Kincardine men have brought home top
honours in a ju-jitsu competition held April 26, in Hamilton.
John Irwin, age 26, placed third in his 185 pound weight
class, while Mike Weichert, age 30, won the title of Unlimited
Canadian Sport Ju-jitsu Champion in his unlimited weight class. Irwin
and Weichert have been training professionally for about a year in
boxing, wrestling, ju-jitsu and muay thai, and have been entering Mixed
Martial Arts (MMA) fights since November, 2007.
The training involves many types of sports because MMA
competitions include different types of fighting.
“A person with a black belt in karate could fight a boxer, so you have
to be diverse and be good at everything,” said Weichert. “There are
certain rules to follow in these competitions, and the fighting goes on
for three five-minute rounds. But if you’re fighting for a title then
it’s five, five-minute rounds.”...

Couture is hosting a Charity 5K walk/run to benefit the Xtreme
Couture G.I. Foundation. The event will be held at the Centennial
Hills YMCA in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, May 17, 2008. Funds
raised from the event, titled Operation Freedom Run, will go towards a
foundation formed to raise money and awareness for US troops who have been
wounded fighting the war on terrorism...
