Bob Sapp

Seattle Times, United States
By Danny O'Neil Mixed-martial arts: A term invented to cover a fight format that accommodates a number of disciplines. Judo, wrestling, giu-gitsu and muay...— Bob Sapp found out there was no going back as soon as he got to Washington. The new generation of popular but painful TV programming spawns live action blood, sweat & cheers

Hulk Hogan is back in the ring, brother! The platinum-blond mustachioed superstar of fake wrestling isn't dropping body slams -- he's hosting TV's newest guilty pleasure: NBC's revived "American Gladiators." It's part of a slew of top-rated new series -- some cheesy, some not -- tapping into the public's fascination with unconventional fighting for fun. Just look at Ultimate Fighting Championships (whose contenders are known generically as mixed martial artists) on Spike TV, "Fight Quest" on the Discovery Channel or "Human Weapon" on the History Channel. Everybody else -- or at least the male population -- is. Last June, "The Ultimate Fighter 5" finale drew more male viewers, ages 18 to 49, than any other program on TV, cable or broadcast, according to Nielsen ratings. It reached 2.6 million people, beating HBO's Hatton v. Luis boxing match by 800,000 viewers...

Though the field at the Sask Open Judo championships was deeper than usual, the local Koseikan Judo Club saw its competitors rise to the top. The local club sent 18 competitors and brought home 14 medals despite facing a field of 195 competitors in Regina. “It went very well,” said Koseikan instructor Jim Wiens. “I don’t think we had anyone place lower than fourth. And we had competitors in divisions with 11 or 12 people in them. “It was probably the biggest in-province tournament we’ve had in at least five years.” Samantha Trusty (cadet girls under-38 kilograms), Devin Kiryk (cadet boys under-31 kg) and Haley Walz (junior women under-57 kg) won gold...
