The freshman at Maryknoll School
has competed in an international tournament in Japan, placed in every
United States Judo Federation Junior National since 2000, including one
title, and this month won his first Junior Olympic crown. But even the
first-degree brown belt knows he has room for improvement. That's
why every summer the Kane'ohe resident attends the International Summer
Judo Camp at Hawai'i Tokai International College.

The
Role of Wrestling in Mixed Martial Arts Written
by Koy Kosek
In November of 1993, the Ultimate Fighting Championship
was organized. The concept was brilliant in its simplicity: there were
only two major rules regulating the fighters – no biting and no
eye-gouging – and the rounds were 10 minutes each in length.
Presumably to look good on television, fighters were put into an
eight-sided cage dubbed “The Octagon” with no way out during the
match. Each competitor would try to secure a victory, either by knocking
out, choking out, or forcing the surrender of his opponent. As an

Don't
Mess with Lisa King

She's pretty, articulate and can break you in half. Las
Vegas native Lisa King, 33, fights in the muay Thai martial-arts style,
and if you want to see for yourself, tune in to the Oxygen channel at 9
p.m. August 7 for the debut of Fight Girls. The film follows a group of
American women—trained by another Las Vegan, Master Toddy—who compete
for a chance to fight in Thailand, home of muay Thai.
Master
of the Sword
Eight-year-old Hanna Vise practices at the Keichu-Do
Cajun Karate School in the Evergreen Center Tuesday afternoon. She bowed, struck a stance and then removed a hefty-looking sword from its
sheath. Then, shouting a series of “Huy!”s, the 59-pounder handled the
sword as nimbly as if it was a pointer stick and, with a series of deft
moves, showed the form that won her a World Championship for her division
of Hidden Sword Kata, part of the Tots Weapons grouping for karate. (read
