My Best Friend, the Dolphin I
felt the hot sun’s rays on my back, making my whole body warm. Every
morning my family would come down to the beach to have fun and swim. I
watched Jamas and his friend as they played catch with a beach ball.
Jamas, my eight-year-old brother, had messy brown hair since he never
combed it unless mother forced him to. His face was small with two
curious eyes. Those eyes could see anything, even the tiniest lady bug.
When Jamas wasn’t around on the beach playing with his friend he was
at home annoying someone. My
sister, Lina, was in the corner of the beach talking to her friends.
They whispered to each other, and then laughed quite loudly. Lina had
beautiful brown hair that sparkled whenever the sun reflected on it. She
usually was scared of the smallest thing, like a spider. Lina was older
than me, she being fourteen and I ten. Most of the time, Lina and her
friends were walking in and out of our house, talking and laughing. As
for me, I walked on the beach alone, feeling the sand on my feet. I
didn’t have any friends but I didn’t know why. I never was unkind or
rude to the kids at school, but they still made of fun of my hair that
was always a mess. Lina and her friends would tease me as well, but they
would tease me saying, “You don’t have any friends.” Whenever they
said these things, I did my best to ignore them. I
walked up to the ocean until I was so close I felt the water splashing
on my knees. I entered the ocean and I went deeper into it until the
water was past my waist. Then I jumped in, I felt the cold water all
over my body and saw blue everywhere. I loved the color of the ocean, it
was so wonderful. I guess you could say the ocean was my friend, I love
water and swimming. How many mysteries the ocean holds, from its
wonderfully beautiful plants to its interesting creatures.
I
stopped going deeper and went upwards to take a breath from the sky.
Finally my head came out of the water and I felt myself breathing. I
took one huge breath and dove back into the water, feeling the coldness
of it once again on my skin. I started to go deeper, when I saw
something blue a few inches away. I went closer to this blue thing.
Right there, sitting in front of me was a dolphin! Its eyes were huge
and blue while its skin shone. I looked at it with amazement, thinking
about what I had found. I felt myself having to breathe again, so I left
the dolphin and swam to the top of the water. I started to breathe once
more, and I was just about to go back into the water when I heard
Lina’s far off voice.
“Hurry up home Melissa. It’s dinner time.” I
swam back to shore and hurried home. I went upstairs to dry myself off
with a towel and change my clothing. After I had done so, I went back to
the living room to have dinner with the rest of my family. All
throughout that dinner I thought about the dolphin and what I could do
with it. The
next morning I woke up to the “cock-a-dooling” of our rooster.
That’s how every morning began for me and the rest of my family. The
rooster was like an alarm clock for my family, telling us when to get up
in the morning. I slowly got out of bed, still tired. Then I remembered
the dolphin and I hurried up to pick out clothes and put them on. I
rushed while I brushed my teeth, making the toothpaste slobber
everywhere. I hurried downstairs to have breakfast with the rest of my
family. When I had finished, I asked to be excused and went upstairs to
change into my swimming suit. I
hurried to the beach once I had put my swimming suit on, followed by
Lina and Jamas. Again Lina and Jamas hanged out with their friends while
I walked up to the ocean. This time I didn’t wait to get into the
deeper part of the ocean, but started swimming in the shallow section.
To my surprise, I saw the dolphin in the shallow parts instead of the
deeper section. Her eyes looked at me with happiness and her skin shone.
I looked at her, thinking about what I should name the animal. In the
end, I decided to name her Emerald because her skin shone like emeralds.
Suddenly, I heard my sister’s bossy voice. “Look
what you forgot Melissa”, Lina taunted. I
turned around to face her. She was standing there, holding a necklace in
her hand and her friends behind her, all sharing an evil grin. When I
looked closer at the necklace, I saw it was the gold necklace my mom had
given me. It must have fallen off while I had entered the ocean and Lina
had found it. “Give
it back to me”, I said angrily. Lina
smiled and said, “Want it, well get it.” Then,
she threw the necklace far into the ocean. I went after it, hearing Lina
and her gang laughing in the background. I lost track of the necklace
since it had sank deep into the water. I hated Lina for doing that to
me, for laughing at me and taunting me. My eye started to water and a
tear ran down my cheek. I wiped the tear away, thinking of how I
couldn’t give Lina the satisfaction. I thought about the necklace,
about how much I had loved and treasured it, but I stopped thinking
about Lina and the necklace. I
swam back to where the dolphin had been for comfort, but when I reached
the shallow end of the ocean Emerald wasn’t there. Now I was
completely lonely, not even the dolphin wanted to be my friend. Minutes
late Emerald came back, and with her she brought a wave of water. On top
of the water, something shone. I picked it up to see it was my necklace!
I looked at Emerald and loved her more than ever. Throughout
days and weeks, I kept on visiting the dolphin. Emerald and I became
closer friends each day. Whenever I was upset about something, Emerald
made a smile grow across my face. Lina and her friends still tease me
saying, “You
can’t even find a human friend. All you can find for a friend is a
dolphin.” But
I ignore them. Emerald and I couldn’t speak the same language but we
communicated through our actions. Emerald and I always had a fun time
for she made me happy. She was always there for me and never let me
down. Emerald was just as good as a human friend, maybe even better. The
two most important qualities of friendship are love and kindness.
Emerald had those two qualities, which made her a great friend. And
that’s how I met my best friend, Emerald, the great dolphin. By: Sarah Hardtke Age: 9 |
