Richard
began his Martial Arts training in Tae Kwon Do at the age of 5. He
trained under Master Mu Ung Yi and received his black belt from the
World Tae Kwon Do Headquarters in Korea at the age of 10. In addition to
Tae Kwon Do, at the age of 8 he began training in Japanese Goju Ryu
Style at Collegian Goju Ryu Academy under Shihan Arturo Espina. In 2000,
he began competing in Open Tournaments, mostly the NASKA circuit, under
the direction of Shihan Arturo Espina and Sifo Fernando Cerra, a
competitor himself. He
is currently a member of Shihan Arturo Espina’s Team Sansei and with
his team members, Jennifer Espina, Caitlin Dechelle and Joshau Quartin,
trains and competes in Open and Traditional Forms and Open and
Traditional Weapons. His weapon of choice is the Japanese Samurai Sword,
although he has competed with the Kamas in the past. He
has been an outstanding competitor. He has won numerous first places as
well as Grand Championships. This year he finished first in both Traditional Weapons and
Open Weapons at the U.S. Open in Orlando, Florida, one of the most
prestigious competitions in the world, and was one of the three
competitors in the Youth Weapons Division at the night of Champions. He
is currently ranked first in the 12-l3yrs old Boys Black Belt Youth
Traditional Weapons, third in the Youth Open Weapons and third in the
Youth Traditional Forms divisions. In
addition to competing in NASKA tournaments, Richard also competes in
local tournaments in the Miami, Florida area where he lives with his
parents and older sister Cristina. He also competes in traditional forms
and sparring as part of AAU Tournaments. Richard
is very dedicated to his Martial Arts training. He trains everyday
balancing his schedule between tournament training, continued studies in
Okinawan Goju Ryu with Sensei Robert Young and gymnastics training. He
feels that Martial Arts also provides a way for his Dad and him to spend
quality time together. This
year he will be a 8th grader, he is a good student and
enjoys all kinds of sports especially football. He
is a very big fan of Martial Arts movies and hopes to someday star in
one of his own. With this goal in mind, he began tapping into the
entertainment industry completing a Burger King Kids Commercial as well
as various other commercials this past summer. He has also participated
in Action Film Camp, which gave him a first hand look at how stunts are
performed in action movies. What
the future has in store for Richard Bichara is hard for anyone to predict, but
one thing is for sure, no matter what it is, Martial Arts will continue
to be a very important part of his life.
