On Part 3...I said we would be talking about kata. Now there are many Dojo’s in America that teach kata. Some kata are taught differently then others. In Shojukempo there are 20 kata to be learned. For the beginner student they have Intro kata such as Taikyoku, Pinan, Fukyugata or even Naihanchi it all depends on the Dojo you attend.

Now, there are a lot of Dojo that teach a kata called Pinan, this kata means "peaceful mind " the kata that is taught at most American Kenpo Dojo’s are really the Taikyoku Kata mistakenly to be called Pinan kata. The Pinan kata is from the Shorie ryu or Shorin ryu System of Okinawan Karate-do or Kempo. there are many Americans that study American Kenpo that don’t know, that Pinan really is Taikyoku.

They learn 3 Pinan’s and think that the real name of that kata, when its really the wrong name! The Pinan is of Okinawan Kempo Karate-do in the Japanese version its called Heian! When Funakoshi learned kata in his home land of Okinawa, he learn the Pinan kata and the Fukyugata, plus many others. When he came to Japan he changed the names to the Japanese version, which are called Heian. some of the Dojo’s in Okinawa taught ether Naihanchi, Pinan, Fukyugata first! I will take you thru the kata of Okinawan kempo, Shojukempo and Shotokan Karate-do. Now, the truth is the truth and what has been done, has been done. You cannot change it. But, I can show you the real kata you should be learning at you local Dojo. Please don’t be upset with what I’m about to say, every Instructor teaches differently! The Kata that I have here are from the following: ryu's ( styles )

Some American Kenpo
( kata )

Pin’an ( taikyoku )
Kata 1 ( Pin’an )
Kata 2 ( Pin’an )
Kata 3 ( Pin’an )

And soon as they reach Black Belt level, they learn Shotokan Karate-do kata. The reason for this is because, some American Kenpo Dojo only have about 5 to 6 kata and use the Shotokan kata to fill in the gaps

For completion. Kata is the Basic’s of Kihon, Kumite. Master Funakoshi made his students practice kata 1000 times and if they didn’t get it right they would practice another 1000 or 2000 more times, until he was satisfied with what he seen. Kata teaches you many things, such as balance, coordination, focus, power and technique. The more one practices kata the better he or she get, there is another way to practice kata. With another person called Bunkai. Most Dojo’s use the Bunkai as a learning tool for their students, to show the hidden technique in the kata.
