Sarah: "Thank
you Troy for doing this interview with us it's great to
have you visit. First...I'd love to know have
you always been into karate? How did you first become interested in
martial arts?"
Troy:
"When I was really little I watched my brother, Matt, take
karate classes. It looked like a lot of fun, so when I was old
enough, I wanted to do it, too."
Sarah:
"Awesome! And
now you're like ranked
4th in the world in traditional weapons, 6th in the world in open
weapons and 6th in the world in traditional forms! That's
pretty impressive...Are you competing anymore this year? If
not when and where will you compete?"

Troy: "Thank
you Sarah. The
NASKA season is over for this year, but I will compete at all of the
local NCKA tournaments and I try to make it to the NKA Northern
Minnesota tournaments as much as possible."
Sarah:
"What’s your training routine like? Do you train every day?"
Troy: "I
practice bo speed and targeting drills everyday. I also run
through all of my forms everyday. My dad knows a lot about how my
karate forms should look, so he watches me do my forms at home and tells
me what I need to correct. I also train at Mr. Carnahan's at least
two times a week. We work a lot on basics and traditional form."
Sarah:
"Who do you train with?"
Troy: "I
train mostly with Mr. Carnahan. He works a lot on keeping my
basics clean and he trains me on my traditional forms. I also
train sparring with Mr. Carnahan. That helps me to be in good
physical shape when I do my forms."
I
also train with the Bo Staff with Wayne Dalglish and Michael Bernardo. I try to get
together with them in person as much as possible. Wayne lives in
California now, but he is from Minnesota so I get to see him whenever he
comes back to visit."
Sarah:" Which
Demo Team are you on?"
Troy:
"I'm on the National Karate Demo Team. There are 25 National
Karate Schools and the Demo Team is made up of students from National
Karate who have auditioned for and made the Team. There are other
NASKA members who are on the National Karate Demo Team, too, like B. J.
Carnahan and Jenny Johnson-Blanchard."
Sarah:
"Who’s your fav martial artist?"
Troy: "My
favorite martial artist is Mr. Carnahan. He is really nice and his
classes are fun. He's
awesome because he knows how to get out of every possible move and he
teaches us really cool take down techniques. He's also great at
sparring. He knows how to counter everything. No one can
ever get a move in on him."
Sarah:
"You're really lucky to have a great teacher. What are your fav things to do for fun when you’re not training in
martial arts?"
Troy:
"I
love the snow and things like sledding and snowball fights with my
brother. I also like riding ATV 4-wheelers around our house.
Wayne is the one who got me interested in 4-wheelers. He use to
ride a lot before he moved to California. When Wayne came to visit
last time, he brought his dirt bike to our house and we rode 4-wheelers
and dirt bikes. It was a lot of fun. I also like baseball,
football and N64 video games.
Sarah:
"How is school for you? How are you able to fit it all in and still
get good grades?"
Troy: "I am home schooled. I get all A's and B's in school. I keep
the same school schedule as the public school kids so I have busy days,
but I can get in my training in the afternoon after school."
Sarah:
"Home schooled? Wow, I'd love to hear more about that the next time
you visit.
Thank you very much for being with us today! Will you come visit our
Celebrity Chat room and chat with us and all your fans here at Sarah's
Corner?"
Troy:
"Sure. I think that would be a lot of fun."
