Winchester
woman and granddaughter learn the art of karate
Kentucky Post, KY
It's rare that a teenage girl can swing a set of Japanese
nunchakus at her 62-year-old grandmother and get away with it. Even more
unexpected is a granny who swings back. Winchester resident Goldie
Nichols and her granddaughter, 13-year-old Larissa Mays,
have practiced the art of Central Area Shaolin Kung Fu together for the
last year. Through the experience, Goldie has learned self-defense, and
Larissa has found a sport she hopes to turn into a career. The two have
grown closer, and on Jan. 18, both earned their green belts. "I think
it's awesome, a grandmother and granddaughter going to karate classes
together," Goldie said. "People think it's unusual, but I say,
'Yeah, I love it."...

PEOPLE:
Ridgefield student will repay debt to USA
Dylan Shay
He’s an all-American kid who knows better than most the real
meaning of the American Dream, and he intends to pay back the
nation that gave him the chance to follow it. Ridgefield High
senior Dylan Shay grew up enjoying everything the town — and the
United States — has to offer. A second-degree black belt in Tae
Kwon Do, Dylan is also on the cross country and track teams. He
carries a 4.0 grade average, works a part-time job and like the
rest of the class of 2008, he’s looking forward to graduation.
And yet, Dylan Shay says he grew up with a debt to pay, one on
which he begins to make good on June 27. That’s the day Dylan
Shay, RHS grad, becomes Mr. Shay, U.S. Naval Academy plebe.
“I know what my life could have been like if I didn’t live
here,” Dylan said. “It’s about giving back and serving my
country. One part of it is getting an education, but my education
will only help me serve my country better.” Dylan came to the
U.S. when he was still an infant. His parents, Geri and Terence
Shay, adopted him from an orphanage in Korea...

Arts Master Brings Message of Discipline to Schools
Sensei
Jordan with students from the JMA Mentoring Initiative
BlackNews.com (press release), CA
In 2007, over 30 Chicago Public Schools students fell
victim to gun violence. More struggle daily with the challenges of gangs,
drugs and limited school resources. Determined to provide realistic
alternatives to mediocrity and disparity, martial arts master Fred Jordan
and his organization the American Martial Arts Science Association (AMASA)
have partnered with CPS to bring the science of martial arts to Chicago
youth.
Through his Jordan Martial Arts (JMA) Mentoring
Initiative, Sensei Jordan uses the physical rigors of martial arts science
as a foundation to instill the mental tenacity required to be successful
not only as a martial artist, but in life. Currently being held at 9
schools throughout Chicagoland, JMA Mentoring Initiative emphasizes the
development of integrity in tandem with the body...
